A Qatar ID (QID) is the resident smart card issued by the Ministry of Interior. Issuing the card costs QR100, and the card stays valid while the residence permit behind it is valid. Renewing the permit is a separate fee charged per year: QR500 for family, QR1,000 for company-sponsored employees and QR300 for personal sponsorship.
Qatar ID Cost and Renewal: The Key Numbers
- Card issuance: QR100, and that is not the renewal fee.
- Residence permit renewal per year: QR500 for family, QR1,000 for company-sponsored employees, QR300 for personal sponsorship.
- Three-year renewal carries a 20% discount.
- Renewal opens three months before the expiry date.
- e-Gate adds QR100 for one year, QR150 for two years or QR200 for three years.
What Is a Qatar ID (QID)?
A Qatar ID is the smart identity card that the Ministry of Interior issues to residents. The card carries the holder’s QID number, photo, nationality and residency details, and it functions as the main identity document for dealing with government, banks and employers in Qatar.
People use “QID”, “Qatar ID”, “smart card” and “resident permit card” for the same document. The card is not the same as the residence permit itself. The permit is the right to reside, and the card is the physical ID that carries it.
What Is a Qatar ID Used For?
A Qatar ID is used for residency, employment, banking, healthcare, mobile contracts and most government services. Employers record the QID number on the employment file, the Wage Protection System and the bank payroll file, so an expired card can block salary payments and official transactions.
- Residence permit and exit or re-entry processes.
- Employment contracts, WPS and end-of-service files.
- Bank accounts, payroll and mobile or internet contracts.
- Health card registration and public services.
- Metrash and MOI e-services.
How Much Does a Qatar ID Cost?
A Qatar ID card costs QR100 from the Ministry of Interior. That QR100 is the card fee, not the renewal fee. The residence permit renewal behind the card is charged separately, per year, and the amount depends on the sponsorship type.
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| ID card issuance, new card | QR100 |
| Residence permit renewal, wife, children and family sponsorship, per year | QR500 |
| Residence permit renewal, employees sponsored by companies, institutions and shops, per year | QR1,000 |
| Residence permit renewal, personal sponsorship, servants, farmers and sailors, per year | QR300 |
| Three-year renewal discount | 20% |
| Qatar Post delivery of the new permit | QR20 |
| Medical examination for a residence permit | QR100 |
| e-Gate, one year | QR100 |
| e-Gate, two years | QR150 |
| e-Gate, three years | QR200 |
| e-Government services, three years | QR250 |
A renewal quote combines the permit fee for the sponsorship type with any card reissue charge, so the total can be higher than the annual permit fee alone. Fees are set by the Ministry of Interior and can change. Confirm the total in Metrash or the MOI e-services portal before paying, especially when the application includes e-Gate or e-government add-ons.
What Other Costs Come With a Qatar ID?
The Qatar ID card fee is QR100. Add-ons are separate: e-Gate costs QR100 for one year, QR150 for two years or QR200 for three years; e-government services cost QR250 for three years. A residence permit medical examination costs QR100 at the Medical Commission when the permit route requires one; that fee is not charged on every renewal.
Four charges appear on top of the annual permit fee, and each one is optional or conditional. A medical examination for a residence permit costs QR100 and is paid at the Medical Commission. A new or reissued card costs QR100. Qatar Post delivery costs QR20. e-Gate and e-government services are add-ons the applicant selects.
- Medical examination. QR100, required for a residence permit and paid by card at the Medical Commission.
- Card issuance or reissue. QR100 for the smart ID card.
- Qatar Post delivery. QR20 when the new permit is mailed.
- Work permit renewal. A separate service with its own fee that depends on the permit category, so it is quoted separately from the QID and residence permit.
Estimate the renewal
The estimate uses the published MOI fees on this page. It excludes work permit fees, fines and any case-specific charge. Confirm the total in Metrash before paying.
How Long Is a Qatar ID Valid?
A Qatar ID stays valid while the residence permit behind it is valid. Residence permits in Qatar are renewed for one to three years, and the renewal can be submitted up to three months before the expiry date. The card is reissued with the renewed permit.
An expired QID is not a minor paperwork issue. Employers face WPS and payroll problems, and the holder cannot complete most government or banking transactions until the permit and card are renewed. MOI allows renewal within 90 days after expiry. After that, the fine is QR10 per day, capped at QR6,000.
How Do You Renew a Qatar ID and Residence Permit?
A Qatar ID renewal is filed online through the MOI e-services portal or Metrash, and the new permit is delivered by Qatar Post. Individuals can renew up to five QIDs in one submission; companies can renew up to twenty.
nnnRenewal costs QR500 for family, QR1,000 for company-sponsored employees and QR300 for personal sponsorship. A three-year renewal carries a 20% discount, and Qatar Post delivery adds QR20.
- Log in to the MOI e-services portal with the smart card, or open Metrash.
- Open Residency, then Renew Residency.
- Select the QID numbers to renew. The limit is five for individuals and twenty for companies.
- Choose the renewal period, one to three years.
- Choose Qatar Post delivery for the new permit.
- Pay the fees and keep the receipt.
The offline route uses the application form submitted to the Expatriates Affairs Department, with a copy of the employer’s ID for personal sponsorship or the employer’s establishment ID for companies and institutions.
What Do You Need to Get a Qatar ID?
A Qatar ID application requires the applicant’s bio data, a completed application with the selected services, and submission to the Ministry of Interior. The service is available to applicants aged 18 and over, and a first-time applicant signs the e-government services agreement.
- Passport and entry or residency record.
- Bio data and photograph.
- Sponsor or employer details, including the establishment ID for companies.
- Selected add-on services such as e-Gate or e-government.
What Happens If a Qatar ID Is Lost or Damaged?
A lost or damaged Qatar ID is replaced through the Ministry of Interior, and the holder should report the loss before applying. The replacement is issued as a new smart card, so the fee and the documents are confirmed at the MOI service point or in Metrash for the specific case.
Until the replacement is issued, the holder should carry the official replacement document and avoid using a copy of the old card for government or banking transactions.
How Do You Check a Qatar ID Status?
A Qatar ID status is checked in Metrash or the MOI e-services portal under Residency. The system shows the permit status and, when an application is rejected, the rejection reason appears in the status box for that QID number.
Companies checking several employees should review the list before the renewal window opens, because one rejected QID can hold up a batch submission.
Why Does the Qatar ID Matter for Businesses?
For a business in Qatar, the QID is the key that links an employee to the company file. Payroll, WPS, health cover, bank accounts and government submissions all use the QID number, and a missing or expired card stops the process at the first step.
- Hiring. The QID confirms the person’s residency status and sponsor before the contract is registered.
- Payroll and WPS. Salaries are tied to the QID number, and an expired card can block the payment file.
- Banking. Company accounts and salary cards require a valid QID.
- Compliance. Permit expiry dates belong on the same tracker as the CR and licence renewals.
