Modern bank tower representing business banking in Qatar

Table of Contents

To open a business bank account in Qatar, register the company first. The bank asks for the Commercial Registration (CR) and a complete compliance file before it activates the account.

Meem opens accounts at Commercial Bank of Qatar (CBQ) and QNB for the companies it forms. CBQ charges no fee to open, but requires a QAR 20,000 initial deposit on activation, waived for Micro companies and QFC companies.

The account follows registration, so this guide starts once you have your CR. The setup itself is covered in company formation in Qatar.

Business Bank Account Qatar: Before You Apply

  • Register the company first. The bank needs the CR, the Articles of Association and a compliant file.
  • CBQ charges no opening fee but asks for a QAR 20,000 deposit on activation; Micro companies and QFC companies are exempt.
  • QNB opens the account online and issues the IBAN straight away; the application is valid for 14 days.
  • Qatar Central Bank (QCB) regulates banks; the QFCRA regulates firms inside the QFC.
  • Meem opens accounts at CBQ and QNB for companies formed with us.

Who Regulates Business Banking in Qatar

The Qatar Central Bank (QCB) regulates banks in Qatar and sets the prudential rules for the sector. The QCB Regulatory Authority (QFCRA) regulates firms registered inside the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC). Every business account is opened under a regulated framework.

Qatar has 17 banks (5 national, 4 Islamic and 8 international) with more than 200 local branches. For a company account, the practical choice usually comes down to a strong corporate bank such as CBQ or QNB.

Who Can Open a Business Bank Account in Qatar

Any company with a valid Commercial Registration (CR) can apply. The bank then runs its own due diligence, so the file matters more than the applicant’s nationality.

  • A mainland company (WLL, SPC or QSC) with a CR and a valid commercial license.
  • A free zone company, with its zone registration in place.
  • A QFC company; at CBQ, QFC companies are exempt from the initial deposit.
  • A 100% foreign-owned company, once the CR and the compliance file are complete.

What the Bank Needs: Documents and KYC

CBQ and QNB both ask for the company file and the identity file. The lists below are the ones each bank publishes.

CBQ and QNB run on the same two files: the company file and the identity file.

CBQ publishes this document list on its Corporate Digital Account Platform. All documents must be valid for at least 30 more days.

How Much You Must Deposit

The deposit rule is where CBQ and QNB differ most, and where a company can save money.

  • CBQ: no fee to open, and a QAR 20,000 initial deposit on activation.
  • CBQ waiver: no initial deposit for QFC-registered companies, or for Micro companies. A Micro company has annual turnover of QAR 1 million or less and fewer than 10 staff.
  • QNB: the current account opens online; the deposit is set by the bank for the account and profile.
CBQ corporate account Opening fee: none Deposit: QAR 20,000 (Micro and QFC exempt) QNB company account Apply online, IBAN straight away Application valid 14 days
CBQ asks for a QAR 20,000 deposit unless you are Micro or QFC. QNB opens online with a 14-day window.

Step by Step: How the Account Opens at CBQ and QNB

Both banks use a digital application, then a compliance review, then a branch visit. The order matters, because the IBAN is issued before the account is active.

  1. Finish the company registration and hold the CR, AOA and licence.
  2. Submit the online application (about 30 minutes) and upload the documents.
  3. The bank issues the account number and IBAN.
  4. The bank runs compliance and due diligence and verifies every related party.
  5. Attend the branch visit with the original documents; all owners and signatories attend.
  6. Sign, then the account is activated.

QNB issues the account number and IBAN straight away once the online application succeeds. The application stays valid for 14 days. QNB also runs a liveness check through DocuSign on each related party, scanning the QID.

How Long It Takes

The IBAN can come the same day, but activation waits on compliance and signatures. Budget for the online application, the review, and the branch visit.

  • The online application takes about 30 minutes, depending on the ownership structure.
  • The account number and IBAN are issued early but stay inactive until the bank completes its checks.
  • A branch visit with the original documents follows; all owners and signatories attend.
  • At QNB, the application is valid for 14 days, so keep the momentum.

Why Business Account Applications Are Delayed or Rejected

Most delays come from the file, not the bank. Fix these before you apply.

  • Applying before the CR is issued.
  • Documents expiring soon; CBQ wants at least 30 more days of validity.
  • Missing identity documents for a shareholder, signatory or related party.
  • A mismatch between the CR activity and what the business will actually do.
  • Not having all owners and signatories available for the branch visit.

How Meem Opens Your Account at CBQ or QNB

We prepare the file, submit the online application, book the branch visit and attend it, so the account is activated without a wasted trip. The same team handles company formation in Qatar, the Commercial Registration and the licensing that follows.
